Result 1: Metacognitive Best Practice Handbook

This best practice handbook gathers and analyze best practices in the use of metacognitive activities to support reflective and self-directed learning in adult education learning environments, specifically amongst low-skilled and NEET adult learners. This research set the context for the further project outputs, and ensure that all outputs developed through the project are focused on a wider European audience, to maximize the dissemination and exploitation possibilities, increase transferability and long-term sustainability of the project outputs. The impact of this output will be that adult education centres across Europe will not only increase their awareness of such techniques, but will be able to diversify and increase their own support techniques. The impact of the handbook will be that adult educators will be able to implement these best practices, methodologies and techniques highlighted as being effective in the handbook to the benefit of the direct target group.

Result 2: Metacognitive Competence Framework

The development of a competency framework is an effective method to assess, maintain, and monitor learners’ metacognitive knowledge, skills and attitudes and progress towards them. As a key part of this project, establishing the metacognitive competency framework allows for the clear definitions of the metacognitive knowledge, skills and attitude required to adopt a metacognitive in self-directed learning, for the identification of specific metacognitive competencies, in the form of sets of self-reflective topics and for the development and proposal of courses and training opportunities for both adult learners and adult educators based on the framework. The Framework of Metacognitive Competences defines the key components of competencies needed by adult learners to effectively integrate metacognition into their individual learning context, as well as to provide and validate an EU reference framework for developing and evaluating metacognitive competences. The framework is aimed at adult learners but it is also relevant and of interest to pre-service / in-service teachers and trainers and educators, as well as educational and lifelong learning policy makers, relating to the technological upskilling and capacity building of adult education as a whole.

Result 3: Metacognitive Learner Interactive e-Course

The e-Course provides a 30-hour course aimed at introducing, explaining and encouraging low-skilled/educated adult learners through a series of engaging, interactive modules which cover each competence of the metacognitive framework in detail. This content is developed in accordance with the Framework of Metacognitive Competences, with a focus on the skills and competences associated with each level of proficiency within the framework. Real-life, practical scenarios are developed around simple tests, and problem-solving exercises etc. which are applicable to the desired learning outcomes. A focus of the content is on activities and outcomes linked to the metacognitive skills, knowledge and attitude covered in the competency framework and subsequent modules. Content is developed so that progression through the e-course mirrors the progression through the different stages of proficiency of the competency framework. This illustrates the value of further metacognitive skills and knowledge in terms of lifelong knowledge and skills acquisition. The long term impact is that more and more vulnerable and NEET adult learners in Europe will build the skills and knowledge to successfully increase their capacity to learn flexibly, opening up more opportunities to learn, progress professionally and diversify their career.

Result 4: Metacognitive Supporter e-Course

This 15-hour e-Course and supporting CPD resources will upskill, reskill and focus adult educators and trainers to have the skills and knowledge to be able to actively provide support and guidance to adult learners’ self-directed and reflective learning activities relating to their metacognitive skills. The Met-AE Facilitator e-course is an innovative, interactive digital training course aimed at upskilling adult education staff who act as metacognitive supporters to learners studying digitally. The e-Course supports adult education organisation staff, namely educators to understand how to effectively apply their intimate, contextual knowledge of the subject, the learner and their situation, knowledge and skills, to the metacognitive theory of learner regulation and reflection. This e-course will act as a learning accelerator where metacognitive ‘supporters’ can build on existing subject knowledge and teaching skills, to allow them to successfully support learners to achieve their goals in different, often difficult, new circumstances.

Result 5: Metacognition Change Management Toolkit

The toolkit provides key resources to adult education organisations and their leaders to support their teachers and learners to make a sustainable transition to the integration of metacognition within their existing adult education learning environment. The guide also includes lessons learned from the project implementation, to ensure the full picture is provided to adult education centres who adopt the project’s tools after the project is finished. This provides adopters with a dynamic up-to-date guide on how to successfully implement the Met-AE metacognitive strategy within their training organisation. Its innovation is linked to the role it plays in facilitating the adoption of the Met-AE competence framework and e-courses – it’s main aim is to ensure the smooth integration and correct implementation of both of these results in adult education centres.
