The major professional association of educational institutions in the Czech Republic that deals with
adult education is the Association of Adult Education Institutions in the Czech Republic (Asociace
institucí vzdělávání dospělých České republiky – AIVD), which has been around since 1990. The
AIVD's objectives are to advance the needs and interests of adult education institutions, organise
professional resources for growth, collaborate with state authorities and other organisations in the
planning and execution of adult education-related policies, host professional and public events,
publish scholarly works, and represent members and their endeavours in local, national, and
international associations. Additionally, the AIVD publishes the professional magazine Andragogika
v praxi.
Founded in 1993, the Association of Universities of the Third Age (Asociace univerzit třetího věku –
AU3V) is a consortium of more than 40 educational establishments that offer postsecondary
education to elderly Czech residents.
As a division of the Centre for Higher Education Studies, the National Centre for Distance Education
(Národní centrum distančního vzdělávání) was founded in 1995. The Centre conducts research
keeps track of, counsels, and disseminates information in the field of distance and lifelong learning 48
within the context of higher education in the Czech Republic and around the globe. The Centre keeps
up with the latest developments in the application of contemporary communication technologies
in education, primarily the growth of social media, e-learning, and LMS systems.
Czech libraries actively promote the growth of information management and reading literacy, they
serve as natural hubs for lifelong learning. They serve as venues for civic and community education
as well. The mission of the publicly beneficial Association of Libraries in the Czech Republic (Sdrušení
knihoven České republiky) is to promote democracy by facilitating access to information resources
and cultural assets.
Another significant player is the 1994-founded non-profit National Training Fund (Národní
vzdělávací fond). Enhancing and modernising the nation's potential for human resources is its
primary goal. Its operations include performing studies and forecasting the demand for
qualifications on the job market, as well as assessing the state of education and its constituent
aspects, with a focus on vocational education.
