Why is relevant for adult educators and adult education centers?
Why this case study is a success / best practice?
Denmark has a solid infrastructure that supports lifelong learning and adult education. Non-
governmental organisations' (NGOs) private initiatives are often the foundation of non-formal
learning activities. Included in non-formal adult education are: 1. Independent non-formal
education, such as volunteer work in associations and evening classes, 2. Extension courses offered
by universities, 3. Day folk high schools, 4. Independent private boarding schools (continuation
schools, home economics, arts and crafts, and folk high schools).
To participate in liberal adult education, there are no specific educational or professional
requirements. The foundation of private, non-formal adult education is community and fellowship.
Danish non-formal adult education can be separated into Adult non-formal education that is
voluntary and Adult education that is voluntary and organised in associations
To be eligible for funding and to be assigned facilities, the private non-formal education activity
needs to be founded by a non-formal adult education association with a statute. There were about
16,500 associations in 2008, of which about 1,500 belonged to the non-formal adult education
sector and 15,000 were based on volunteering. A non-formal adult education committee may be
appointed by the local authority formed of most users who are broadly represented, and a minority
chosen by the local authority from among its municipal council members. The committee handles
administrative duties, such as allocating venues and allocating grants, and it makes specific decisions 50
about non-formal adult education societies and their operations. Non-formal adult education in
Denmark aims to increase a person's general and academic insight and skills as well as their ability
and desire to take charge of their own lives and participate actively in society. Danish non-formal
adult education includes classes, study groups, talks, activities that foster debate, and loosely
structured programmes. Participation is fee-based. Teaching is typically provided at night schools,
which set their own parameters for the subjects and activities they offer while adhering to the legal
framework. A non-formal liberal education activity's total grant cannot exceed one-third of the
associations' total salary. Every year, almost 700.000 people participate.

Adult Education in North Macedonia
The Republic of Macedonia's Lifetime Learning Network (LLN) is a national umbrella organisation
that unites organisations and institutions that support adult education and lifetime learning with
VET providers. Since its registration in 2012, the LLN has brought together businesses, universities,
civil society organisations, and veterinary providers. The LLN offers knowledge and addresses all VET
concerns in its activities, along with issues related to lifelong learning in Macedonia. The
Macedonian Language Network (LLN) collaborates with several formal and informal European
networks and associations to share knowledge and experiences that can be utilised by its members
in Macedonia. The organisation has participated in several Erasmus+ initiatives dedicated to adult
