techniques, aiming to enhance learning experiences and meet students' real-time needs. This
research delves into a case study in Lithuania focused on university online or blended learning
courses, examining the utilization of learning analytics as a metacognitive tool.

The findings of the research, show that employing metacognitive strategies establishes a supportive
learning environment, allowing educators to gain insights into students learning styles, needs, and
expectations. Teachers regularly review a student’s Moodle profile information and utilize log data
to assess the level of attentiveness to the learning material. Concerning learning design, educators
devote considerable time to meticulously plan, select education material, assignments, and provide
relevant information. This includes clearly outlining goals, setting deadlines, specifying assessment
criteria, and articulating learning outcomes in a structured manner.

In terms of performance monitoring, teachers actively utilize various internal Moodle tools such as
discussion forums, logs, activity completion tools, task assessment tools, progress bars, and
calendars. Additionally, they incorporate external tools like Adobe Connect, Google Docs, Padlet,
and mapping tools to refine the learning and teaching processes. Feedback serves a dual purpose,
firstly input from both peer students and the teacher aids learners in their educational journey, and
secondly feedback from students to the teacher can be used to enhance learning design.

Why is relevant for adult educators and adult education centers?

Why this case study is a success / best practice?
                                                                                                                  36
Metacognitive activities are incorporated into all the courses examined. These strategies are used
to foster a positive learning environment, build rapport between students and teachers, and gain a
better understanding of students' learning needs. The Lithuanian study highlights that Learning
Analytics (LA) serves as a metacognitive tool for tracking student progress and assessing their
engagement with learning materials. LA enables educators to monitor student performance using
various tools, pinpointing real-time issues, and tailoring learning design to enhance the learning
experience. Feedback plays a crucial role in both student learning and teacher development. It can
facilitate student progress by providing them with valuable insights, while also guiding teachers in
refining learning design to better meet students’ needs.
