Increasing girls and women in the digital and ICT sector – started in 2016 – the project was initiated
by the National Coalition in Malta with the support of eSkills Malta Foundation which also provided

The aim of the project was to increase the participation of women in the Information and
communication technology sector. A focus group of 20 women from ICT and education sector was
set. They became the ambassadors with the goal to inspire and encourage women to improve their
digital skills, enter and grow on this specialized market. Another objective of the focus group was to
create a set of guidelines for the companies acting on the digital market to change their approach

During the project development, a study was conducted to identify the gender gap in the telecom

and ICT sectors, SMEs and public institutions. The results of the study included information
regarding common biases, misconceptions, and possible barriers in the development of women
inclusion in the digital sector. The main identified factor of the gender gap in the ICT sector was
education. This discovery led to the organization of another study that tried to identify the
attractiveness and motivation of women for a career in the digital sector.
