6.3 CESIE (ITALY)
Thanks to the Met-AE project, we have learned about the powerful impact that metacognitive skills
can have for one’s life and not only professionally. Learning about oneself is crucial in order to
develop the right skills and tools that will allow for a better work-life balance and better
performance overall. It is often undervalued the importance of being able to self-assess and deal
with daily conflicts and small “fights”.
Metacognition is able to provide some of the best tools and develop them in a coherent and
sustainable way. Learning itself can be enhanced via metacognition and self-understanding.
Educators and teachers are fundamental individuals in the life of their students, they can influence
them either positively or negatively and have huge lasting impact. The possibility to use
metacognition methodologies and resources can provide learners and students with the tools to
deal with complex issues and with the ability to better understand themselves and the way they 63
learn. Once these approaches are set during learning phases, they will always influence future
learning events for those same students providing positive lasting effects.
Projects such as Met-AE, which fosters these kinds of methodologies and in particular metacognition
and several uses of it, can produce overall improvement in the learning environment as a whole due
to influencing teachers both teachers and students equally.

Metacognition is a powerful concept, far beyond thinking about thinking approach. It implies
learning with meaning for the learner, for the teacher and for the beneficiary of the student new
acquired knowledge.
It is a challenge to create learning materials that will help adults change their learning perspective.
You must teach them first of all important abilities that will help them not only in the professional
career, but also during their lifetime. You have to teach them to control, monitor, evaluate and
regulate themselves, to be aware of the information they receive from you as a trainer and content
creator, process it, find the right strategies to approach it and voluntarily control it in their own
advantage.
Teaching metacognitive strategies refers to empowering your students, build the confidence in
themselves, their capacity to self-improve and to constructively manage the development level they
